Career and Technical Education Summer Conference 2010

Trade and Industrial Education

Date: July 20-22, 2010 (See special preconference opportunities below)

Location: Sheraton Greensboro Hotel at Four Seasons/Joseph S. Koury Convention Center

Cost: $165 until July 10; $200 Onsite. Online registration will close July 10. Payment must be mailed by July 10 in order to be processed.

Program Highlights

Summer Conference for Trade and Industrial Education is always a time of renewal, update, and networking. An exciting agenda has been planned for you with this in mind. This conference will give you an opportunity to update your skills and network with other T&I teachers across the state.

Program Focus

The first general T&I session will be an Awards Ceremony and T&I Update 3:30-5 pm Tuesday, July 20.

Workshops for all areas

Automotive Service Technology
GTCC Jamestown campus will host these workshops which will include: Tire pressure monitoring, Turbo chargers, Hybrid Tasks: No hybrid, no problem, Hands-on electrical: the chairless classroom, NAPA Tool Truck Exhibit, Light-duty Diesel emissions, Scan tools, Filtration, Auto & Medium-duty alignment, Community College Automotive Manufacturer’s programs, Hunter Equipment Trailer Exhibit, and Snap-On Truck Exhibit.

Collision Repair Technology and Diesel Technology
GTCC Jamestown campus will host these workshops in conjunction with the Automotive Service Technology workshops including additional workshops specifically designed for Collision Repair and Diesel Technology.

NCCER Craft Instructor Training Classes
Training will be held Wednesday, July 21, and Thursday, July 22. Registration is $55. Participants must register during the online conference registration process.

NCCER Green Module Instructor Certification Class and Exam Certification
Training will be held Wednesday, July 21. Registration is $55 and includes the training materials and the certification exam fee. Participants must register during the online conference registration process.

Weatherization, Lead Paint Requirements, NCCER ANR Training, NCCER ATEF Certification Training, NCCER Record Keeping, Yearly Reports, and Audits Training

CISCO Hands-on Instructor Training
Training will be held Wednesday, July 21, and Thursday, July 22, at the Weaver Academy in Greensboro. These workshops will be geared to help the Networking CISCO teachers gain better knowledge and skills associated with the Cisco Networking Academy courses. National Cisco Academy Lead Instructors will be leading the efforts on Thursday and local Cisco regional instructors will be conducting the hands-on activities for Wednesday.

Computer Engineering Teachers
CompTIA A+ certification exam is new again for 2010-2011 school year. Workshops will include NCDPI Update on the CET program, ExplorNet will present workshops on Troubleshooting and Data recovery using rescue disk, What students need to know in the New CompTIA A+ Objectives, Best Practices and ideas for teaching the New CompTIA A+ objectives, CMOSS will present workshops on Using 21st century Teaching tools including Moodle, Alan Rowland- CompTIA will present updates and answer your certification questions, and Carolina Training Associates will provide a Hands-on SkillsUSA Computer Maintenance Technology Contest for teachers. This contest is the same hands-on contest your students will do during the state contest.

Digital Media and TV Programming and Broadcasting Teachers -Animation Workshop
Animation is one of the more difficult areas of the Digital Media curriculum. This two- day workshop will instruct teachers on how to create and modify Flash animation that their students can do. You will need to bring your own laptop or you will have to look on as others do the activities. Trial Software will be provided in the class for installation. Training will be held Wednesday, July 22, and Thursday, July 23.

Drafting Teachers
Applied software will provide hands-on workshops as follows: Wednesday will focus on Architectural Drafting curriculum and will address objectives of the curriculum on which the state as a whole needs improvement. On Thursday, Engineering Drafting curriculum objectives will be addressed. This is a hands-on workshop; however, teachers will have to bring their own laptops with their software already installed. There will be a few spares, but those who do not bring their own laptops may have to share. Training will be held Wednesday, July 22, and Thursday, July 23.

Electronics Teachers ETA certification CRAM course with Exam.
NCDPI has obtained a statewide ETA-I membership for all teachers. ETA-I is the largest professional organization for Electronic Technicians in the country and is highly recognized by post-secondary institutions and industry. All NC Electronic curriculum will be aligned to ETA-I standards as of this summer. New Electronics I & II blueprints will be released during summer conference. Over the next three years, all electronics teachers must become CETa certified by ETA-I. The certification is already paid for as part of the statewide membership. ETA-I will provide a CRAM course for CETa certification. On Thursday afternoon, teachers will be able to take the exam at no cost.

Printing Graphics Teachers
PICA, GAREF(PrintEd), Industry representative, and NCDPI will present the future of Printing Graphics in North Carolina. A draft of the new strategic plan and overviews of the new blueprint requirements will be presented along with various items of interest.

Public Safety Teachers
This new cluster area will be the focus of workshops aligned to the objectives of the Introduction to Public Safety course being taught in various LEAs across the state. Criminal Justice, Fire Fighting, Emergency Management, and EMT focus will be included.

Welding Technology Teachers
Using the Mobile Welding Unit from Pitt Community College and in conjunction with Lincoln Electric, welding teachers will have the opportunity to learn and update their skills with hands-on activities in a real environment. Training will be held Wednesday, July 21, and Thursday, July 22. The Unit will be available on Tuesday for tours prior to the Wednesday and Thursday workshops.

Preconference

Automotive Service Technology at GTCC
GTCC Jamestown Campus will host this preconference on Tuesday morning, July 20, 8am to 12pm for Automotive Instructors (pre-registration is required). This is part of the required 20 hours of CEU needed to meet NATEF yearly instructor requirement. This preconference will have workshops which will include: On-Car Brake Lathe, Sealers and thread lockers, On-line Training-Melior, NATEF Program Re-Certification. There is no cost, but registration is required.
